Both hammocks and nets are usually made out of some sort of polyethylene, polypropylene, or a mixture between the two. They are all durable and deliver a similar feel on the skin. However, not all materials were created equal.
A thing to pay particular attention to is the size of the mesh the net is made from. A mesh with bigger holes is more breathable, but it could be ineffective against no-see-ums. Here are three things to consider:
- Breathability: The smaller the holes, the lesser the air circulation and ventilation. If you want a well-ventilated hammock bug net, you’ll need larger holes.
- Penetrability: The smaller the holes, the fewer insects and mosquitoes get through, making them more impenetrable.
- Visibility: The smaller the holes, the lesser the visibility. If you want to be able to see outside through the mesh material, you need to get a hammock bug net with bigger holes so your visibility isn’t compromised.
What you also want to pay attention to in terms of comfort is the design. The mesh should be large enough to allow you to sleep comfortably in your hammock, sitting in it diagonally. Large enough means that you shouldn’t come in contact with it at any time, or bugs could bite you through it.
A vertical zipper design is also more comfortable than a horizontal one, allowing easier access in and out of the net.
